When I first started reading Radical Candor, I was concerned that it was a book designed for people managers (from the cover, it does seem that way). However, while reading the book, I started to realize that the information contained within was helpful for not only managers but also individual contributors and mentors.
Take Aways
- Give praise in public and critical feedback to colleagues in private. This is a great strategy for supporting folks in the right way and providing them with confidence and coaching in a private setting.
- Don't let your career progression/learning slow for too long. We all have times in our lives when we may have to slow down. For me, it was the birth of my son. Thankfully, I work for an excellent company that understood what I was going through and allowed me the flexibility to work during this time. We all need someone in our lives who can care personally and challenge us directly so we can grow.
- Embrace your vulnerability and weakness. As I like to say, everyone is on a journey to success. Be open to asking for feedback, receiving it, and taking it to heart.
